Welcome to these free online training courses for supporting people with learning disabilities and autism.

These materials are for everyone involved in the care, support and well-being of people with learning disabilities and autism, specifically family members, carers, health care professionals and social care professionals.

They will also be useful to other service providers who may come into contact with people with learning disabilities and autism in their day-to-day work.

The aim of these materials is to improve the support provided to people with learning disabilities by:

  • promoting greater awareness of abilities and challenges
  • integrating the values of person-centred care into support, so that a person’s support can be based on their individual needs
  • promoting best practices in the areas of communication and risk management across multidisciplinary teams in care and support planning.

Course details

These online training courses for supporting people with learning disabilities are free, and a certificate is awarded upon successful completion of each course.

Learning disabilities and autism awareness

This introductory course will explore the challenges that people with learning disabilities and autism face, the importance of understanding their individual support needs and how we can improve our communication skills to enable better support.

Audience: Any public facing health or social care professional, family members and carers.

Course content is approximately 60 minutes long and you can stop and start as you wish.

Applying the principles of person-centred care

This course takes an in-depth look at how the the principles of person-centred care can be used to improve support for people with learning disabilities and autism.

Audience: Anyone involved in supporting people with learning disabilities.

Course content is approximately 120 minutes long and you can stop and start as you wish.

Managing risk when supporting people with learning disabilities

Improvements mean changes; and this course looks at how to identify and manage risks in a positive way to ensure people with learning disabilities and autism get the support that they are entitled to.

Audience: Any health or social care professional.

Course content is approximately 120 minutes long and you can stop and start as you wish.
